I drove through Charlottesville today, past the park where the R. E. Lee statue used to be - the rallying point for the alt-right goons in 2017. The statue is gone. I saw a presumably homeless person sleeping on the ground. It was hard to believe that neo-nazis started a riot there just a few years ago.
That's the danger, of course. Everything seems fine - if you accept the existance of homelessness as fine. Just another day in small, southern city. I'm afraid that the events of August 2017 weren't shocking enough - or maybe covid-19 drove it out of people's minds. The neo-nazis didn't go away, of course. They just crawled back under the rock to wait for their next oppportunity. January 6, 2021, was a test run. Another one will happen eventually.
