I’m a 51-year-old trans-lesbian who presents as male. My background includes a lot of punk rock, Riot Grrrl, intersectional feminism and a hearty dose of depressive realism. I’m also from a southern red state, and my kid is a self-described pansexual.
When I saw the word “pussification”, I thought it was being used in a power-claiming way, like Pussy Riot. I totally forgot that some people equate “pussy” with weakness. I don’t know how that happened — I was certainly called “pussy” a lot in high school, along with various other derogatory terms for people with other-than-cis-het expressions. Which is weird, because at the time, I sure seemed like a teenage boy who liked girls. I guess it was obvious that something was unusual.
I’ll continue to think of “pussy” as a power-word. And I’ll continue to ignore the ridiculous, insecure cro-mags who feel the need to assert their maleness all over the place. They’re obviously troubled — more deserving of pity than scorn.
“Ammosexual” is pretty good. I might have to use that.
