Occasionally, I suggest that sermons are the least useful part of any church service. Sometimes, I go further and say that a church service with no sermon would be better. Usually, I just say that I have no use for sermons, and never pay attention to them.

Pastors generally don't want to hear that. They try to defend sermons, as if they really believe that their football analogies and strained metaphors are in the same league as the Scripture or the Lord's Meal.

Maybe all pastors are a little bit narcisstic.
