The passage you quote is from a parable where Jesus presents His disciples with the behavior they would expect from a king. He then goes to Jerusalem and gets crucified - He does exactly the opposite of what the parable says.

The Bible rewards study. Surface level readings, with no understanding of context, are often wrong.

I am not singling you out or saying atheists get it wrong - many Christians do the same thing.
